the past couple of days have been nuts over much of Wisconsin.. i guess other areas too.. and heat waves everywhere else. crazy. dan and i woke up yesterday morning and drove down to Gurnee, IL for Aidan's 2nd birthday party. it was 90 degrees and humid! we had to leave early to get back at 4 to work.. and when we pulled into our driveway and got out of the car- it had dropped 30 degrees and was getting dark. we knew rain was on the way- and i was really excited because that means we dont have to set up the patio! we went to work, took a wine quiz.. did all of our sidework to get ready for saturday night dinner time at Bosley. and about ten minutes before the power actually went off- i was telling one of the new girls about how the power had gone off in a storm once before since i had been working there. so that happened.. we had one table in the restaurant, but luckily their food was already done cooking and in the process of being plated up, so they finished their meal in the "dark" though the large windows gave enough light. and on that note- there were sirens going off and tornado watches all over the place.. i dont think by the large front window is a good place to hang out and enjoy your meal. the streets were just crazy- a river was basically flowing down brady street.. couldnt tell there was a curb the water was so high. lights at intersections had stopped working- people were honking at eachother for signals of the "you go ahead before me" while other streets were being blocked off because cars were getting stuck.. i heard a story about how people had to swim away from their cars becasue the water got so high so fast somewhere over on silver spring drive. a buiding on 6th and national had collapsed due to the rain- the old abandoned acupulco bar. so all this- we all knew our power wasnt about to be on the high priority list for the city to come figure out, as everyone else on the street had power, we think lightning hit our power box or something. we closed everything down in the kitchen and called our reservations and let them know they couldnt exactly dine out unless they wanted a cold salad... but the staff still had to hang around for hours telling jokes and i guess having a good time, but we still wanted to leave. at 8 our owner called and gave us the go ahead and leave thing. so- no one made any money. saturday nights are our money nights, too. kind of a bummer.. but i guess when you dont have any saturday nights off, ever.. we went out to La Fuente. =) then we got hit with another wave of crazy storms.. and it kept through most of the night.. and another hit thismorning- it's just passing. i hope it holds off for the drive back to my mom's house!
oh- ps.. i titled this hurricane season because of all the crazy weather here in milwaukee. we couldnt see out our front bay windows just a bit ago- the rain was coming down so hard and the wind was pushing it up against them... but real hurricane season is right when we get married.. and we wanted to do a cruise- but now have to wait a few months for the honeymoon if we do decide on a cruise. no hurricanes while i'm on a boat in the middle of an ocean, thank you. not for me. . .
